  7. I hope you'll enjoy this collection of FRACTION FONTS for the Macintosh. But, before you begin to experiment with them, please take time to read this brief document.

  9. FRACTION FONTS (Type 1) are intended for use with Adobe Type Manager (ATM). If you don't already have ATM, there's no sense going through the installation and calling up the info/demo file, FF-MT1.DOC. It looks like gibberish without ATM.

  12. GETTING STARTED  . . . . .

  14. Okay, let's get going. First, what's stored inthis FF-MT1.SEA you just opened? (By the way, that's an acronym for Fraction Fonts - Macintosh Type 1.)

  16. 1.  Read Me 1st! -- The ASCII file you're reading.
  17.  
  18. 2.  FF-MT1.DOC -- A five-page Microsoft Word 4.0 info/demo document that shows and tells all about FRACTION FONTS for the Macintosh. Open it after you've installed the FRACTION FONTS.

  20. NOTE: Even if you've played with an older ShareWare version of FRACTION FONTS, please reread this document. The keystroke assignments for the degree sign have been refined since the original release of FRACTION FONTS.

  22. 3.  Sixteen (16) FRACTION FONT PostScript Type 1 fonts and a font Suitcase named FF #1 containing a single 12 pt bitmap font and the font metric information for each of the 16 FRACTION FONTS. These items are in the folder named "Fraction Fonts #1".

  24. 4.  What's New? -- Info for those who have installed previous 
  25. versions of FRACTION FONTS.

  27. 5. Order Form -- Your ticket to a full collection of FRACTION FONTS (66 in all) to match the fonts resident in your PostScript printer. Just $25.00!!!

  30. INSTALLATION  . . . . .

  32. Installation of FRACTION FONTS varies depending on whether or not you use Suitcase II and whether you operate with System 6 or System 7. I'll discuss the Suitcase II installation first, because it's a no-brainer. (Heck, none of this is hard.)

  34. SUITCASE II -- Drag the sixteen (16) Type 1 FRACTION FONTS and the FF #1 font suitcase into the folder where you keep your Type 1 fonts. In other words, all the items in the folder named "Fraction Fonts #1".

  36. 1. Bring up Suitcase II (Command K, by default)
  37.  
  38. 2. Now, with the main dialog open, press Command C to bring up the "Suitcases . . ." dialog

  40. 3. Press Command O to "Open File(s) . . ."

  42. 4. Select FF #1 and back all the way out.

  44. Hey, if you have Suitcase, I don't need to tell you any more. (I don't have Master Juggler, but I'll bet the procedure is equally easy.)

SYSTEM 7 -- Make certain your System Folder is CLOSED. Then drag all sixteen (16) Type 1 FRACTION FONTS and the FF #1 font suitcase ONTO the closed System Folder. Your Mac will put everything where it thinks it belongs. (Frankly, this is why I love Suitcase II. It provides a method of housekeeping far tidier than tossing everything in the System Folder . . .)

  49. SYSTEM 6 -- Your System Folder can be open or closed. Drag all sixteen (16) Type 1 FRACTION FONTS onto or into the System Folder. Then, start up your Font/DA Mover and copy all sixteen (16) of the font bitmaps to your System.

Instructions for using FRACTION FONTS are in FF-MT1.DOC. Take time to open this document, print it out, and play with it on-screen before using FRACTION FONTS in your favorite applications. (If you don't have Word 4.0, let me know. I'll export a copy in MacWrite format, but can't guarantee how the translation will work. I don't have MacWrite.)

  59. SHARING FRACTION FONTS  . . . . .

  61. I encourage your sharing FF-MT1.SEA with your friends. All I ask is that you pass it along in its entirety (not just the fonts) so they'll have access to the installation instructions. (And, of course, the Order Form, my CIS number, and my mailing address.)

  63. Also, if you have any Windows-using friends, give them a FRACTION FONTS for the Macintosh demonstration. FRACTION FONTS also are available in Windows format.

As a matter of fact, FRACTION FONTS also are available in TrueType format for both Windows and the Macintosh. These have been generated from the same master outlines, so they'll work for anyone without ATM or a PostScript printer. (I personally prefer Type 1, but I'm a purist with a love affair with Type 1 PostScript fonts.)
